We all are
aware that it’s so easy to cash a bank check at a bank that is listed on the
check. The question that arises here is can you cash a bank check at a creditunion, which is not the same as a standard bank. Before going ahead we should
be acquainted with the term credit union.
What is a credit union?
A credit
union is a not- for-profit cooperative financial institution that is owned and
managed by its members, and is synchronized in the same way as any other
financial institution. Money is in a way given on “rent” to the credit union
therefore the members get a dividend on this money. It provides services with
lower fees compared to standard banks and also offer higher interest rates on
savings accounts. The difference between Credit unions and banks is that the
members who have accounts in the credit union are the owners of the credit
union.
Now heading
towards the main question that is:
Can I Cash a Bank Check at a Credit Union?
All types of
checks can be cashed at a credit union. Every credit union has its own
check-cashing policies. These policies may vary depending on the credit union.
You can look at example, like if the first and last name on the check doesn’t
match a person's identification, then this could create a problem. It is also
possible that the credit union may reject to cash a personal bank check,
written against the individual's personal account, because it's a higher risk
compared with government check.
Things to be
brought
At least two
forms of identification should be brought in order to increase the chances of successfully
cashing a check at your local credit union. Government-issued photo ID is also
required. It would be better if one brings additional proof of identity, such
as a passport or a driving license. The credit union may also charge a fee for cashing
the check if you're not a member.
